Questions

How does DomainNams know if a name is available?

It asks each ending's official registry directly, through RDAP, the standard that replaced WHOIS. If the registry has no record, the name isn't registered. For the few endings without RDAP, it checks the internet's address book (DNS) instead. A few names are reserved or premium, so the registrar's checkout is the final word.

Where should I register my domain?

Any well-known registrar works. Compare the renewal price, not just the first-year deal, make sure privacy protection is included, and turn on auto-renew and two-factor login.

The name I want is taken. What now?

Check whether the website is actually in use: many registered names are parked and for sale. Our guide explains how to find the owner, what to offer and how to pay safely. Or try the .com ideas DomainNams suggests when your first choice is taken.

Can I see who owns a domain?

Use the free WHOIS lookup. You'll see the registrar, registration and expiry dates and status. The owner's name is usually hidden for privacy, but the record shows how to reach them.

Why is it called DomainNams?

It's a play on "domain names", the thing this site helps you find. Plenty of people type "domain nams" in a hurry, and that's exactly where they should land: a free place to search domain names, check who owns them and learn how to choose a good one.

Is DomainNams free?

Yes. Searching, the WHOIS lookup and the guides are free, with no signup. Your searches go straight from your browser to the registries; we don't store them or register names you look up.
