Domain investment calculator
Free domain investment calculator: total holding cost, profit after commission, break-even sale price and expected value based on your chance of selling each year.
Before you buy a domain as an investment, run the numbers. Renewals add up quietly, and most names don't sell every year. This calculator shows your total cost, your profit if you sell, and a realistic "expected" result that accounts for the chance of not selling.
Domain investment calculator
Many investors see only a small percentage of their portfolio sell each year, so a low yearly chance (often 1% to 5%) is realistic for most names. Adjust it to match your own results.
How to read the results
- Total cost if it never sells: what you'll pay in purchase plus renewals over the holding period.
- Profit if it sells in year 1 or at the end: what you'd keep after commission and renewals.
- Expected result: the average outcome across all the possibilities, using your chance of selling. If this is negative, the name probably isn't worth holding at these numbers.
- Break-even sale price: the lowest sale that covers all costs if it sells at the end.
Making the numbers work
- Keep renewals low. High-renewal endings need much higher sale prices.
- Be honest about the sale price. Use real comparable sales from NameBio, not appraisal tools alone.
- Price to sell. A fair buy-now price raises your chance of selling each year.
- Drop names that don't add up. Letting weak names expire is often the best financial decision.
